軋制工序一般由一列(組)或二列(組)粗軋機、中軋機和精軋機組成。分別承擔鋼坯斷面壓縮、半成品軋制變形和成品軋制功能。成品軋機孔型或稱精軋孔型為K1孔,成品前軋機孔型為K2孔,成品前前軋機孔型為K3孔,以下如此類推。
連續式軋機是指幾個軋機機座按軋制方向順序排成一行,軋件同時在幾個軋機內軋制變形,各架軋制速度隨著軋件長度的增加而增加,并保持金屬在每架軋機中的秒流量相等或有輕微的堆拉鋼關系的軋制方式稱連續式軋機。連續式軋機具有很高的機械化、自動化、軋制速度和軋制精度,因而勞動生產率高且產品品質優良,是棒、線材軋機改造和新建的方向。保持在單位時間內軋件通過各軋機體積相等的軋制稱連軋。
